Knights of the Golden Circle and the Civil War...

While I was researching for HAZARDOUS UNIONS I came across the secret society of the Knights of the Golden Circle. The objective of the KGC was to annex a golden circle of territories from Mexico, Central America, Southern America, Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean for inclusion into the United States as slave states.

However, as anti-slavery agitation increased the members of the KGC proposed a separate confederation of slave states, with US states south of the Mason-Dixon line to secede and to align with other slave states to be formed from the golden circle.
Their goal was to increase the power of the Southern slave holding upper class to such a degree that it would never be diminished.

During the Civil War many members of the KGC fought with the confederates in order to continue the right to own slaves. Their mission was to take New Mexico and bring them into the fold of confederates.

The society reached to the northern states as well. Some southern sympathizers from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa were accused of KGC activity and imprisoned during the civil war.

In 1863 the KGC reorganized as The Order of American Knights, and in 1864 as Order of the Sons of Liberty.

Alleged members of the Knights of the Golden Circle:
Most of the Confederates
Buckner Stith Morris
Lambdin P. Milligan
John Wilkes Booth
Jesse James
Sam Houston

Twin sisters separated by war, bound by love...
After the death of their father, twin sisters Maggie and Matty Becker are forced to take positions with officers' families at a nearby fort. When the southern states secede, the twins are separated, and they find themselves on opposite sides of America's bloodiest war.
In the south, Maggie travels with the Hamiltons to Bellevue, a plantation in west Tennessee. When Major Hamilton is captured, it is up to Maggie to hold things together and deal with the Union cavalry troop that winters at Bellevue. Racism, politics and a matchmaking stepmother test Maggie's resourcefulness as she fights for Bellevue, a wounded Confederate officer and the affections of the Union commander.
In the north, Matty discovers an incriminating letter in General Worthington's office, and soon she is on the run. With no one to turn to for help, she drugs the wealthy Colonel Cole Black and marries him, in hopes of getting the letter to his father, the governor of Michigan. But Cole is not happy about being married, and Matty's life becomes all about survival.
Two unforgettable stories of courage, strength and honor.
